GARFIELD –As a police officer, Rebecca Schmidt is accustomed to being a helper, not the person in need of help.
But since a devastating fire last month that displaced six families, including her own, and destroyed her home, Schmidt has been on the receiving end of an outpouring of generosity.
The police union set up a Venmo account to accept all the donations from the community. A local business owner is donating some of his proceeds. And the Red Cross has extended a helping hand to all the families.
The local efforts caught the attention of an entrepreneur in Englewood Cliffs named Alan Mruvka. Best known for founding E! Entertainment Television, Mruvka also founded the self-storage company StorageBlue, which has a location in Garfield.

StorageBlue Named to 2020 Inc. 5000 List
StorageBlue LLC, which operates five self-storage facilities in New Jersey, has been named to “Inc.” magazine’s list of 5,000 fastest-growing private companies for 2020. It ranked No. 4,970 overall and No. 309 in the Consumer Products and Services category, with 55 percent year-over-year growth in revenue, according to a press release.
The annual Inc. 5000 list identifies the private companies with “the most proven track records,” ranked by revenue growth. Companies on the 2020 list account for $209.7 billion in revenue, according to the Inc. website. StorageBlue ranked just behind government-services company VersaTech and ahead of financial-services firm Guaranteed Rate Cos. Software company OneTrust ranked No. 1 with 48,337 percent growth. Rounding out the top five were two health-related businesses, a media company and a telecommunications firm.

NJ Self-Storage Operator StorageBlue Takes Measures to Fight Coronavirus
StorageBlue LLC, which operates five self-storage facilities in New Jersey, has taken measures to ensure the safety of its employees and customers during the coronavirus pandemic. The company recently installed clear corrugated panels in the management office at each of its sites to enforce social distancing. The polycarbonate plastic is stronger and more durable than traditional fiberglass while still allowing 90 percent light transmission, according to a press release.
The custom-fitted panels were placed in front of tenant rental stations to shield employees and customers from direct person-to-person contact. Hand sanitizer is also available at each area.
